16:45 - 17:45 Opening Day

Despite repeated calls for transparency by civil society, we still don’t have clarity on many of the dynamics that took place during recent elections:

  • how did information circulate on social media platforms?
  • what was their role in targeting and amplifying messages?
  • who paid for advertising?

Even looking forward, there are still no mechanism protecting the trustworthiness of election processes that doesn’t require blind faith in the platforms. The organizers of this workshop think this is a risk that should be addressed.

The goal of this workshop is to engage the MyData community in thinking through the opportunities in this domain opened up by personal data rights. What questions could citizens answer through simple exercise of their rights? What would a citizen-journalist agenda look like in this space? What responses can we expect for such an effort? How could we ally with the rest of civil society? This workshop will include a small presentation, followed by a discussion. A diverse set of participants is encouraged to attend, including professionals (business, legal, tech, civil society) supportive of this citizen-led agenda.

Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop if at all possible, but this is not a necessity.
