Heikkilä is media researcher, who takes interest in social, cultural and political changes in the digital environment. These changes pertain to participation in public debate and its quality, developments in news and journalism and the roles of the audience. In his recent research, Heikkilä has paid special attention to surveillance and privacy. He is co-editor of the book . Journalism and the NSA Revelations: Privacy, Security, and the Press.
