Figuring out the rules for the data environment we want
Part I: 10:00 – 11:15
Part II: 11:30 – 13:00
Imagine that we are just starting a series of grassroots workshops about the desirable data future. In these futurathons we figure out together the rules to govern our data environment, with the aim of making it a better place for all of us. Imagine that you are about to take part in creating this desirable data future. What do you think it looks like? What do you think the rules should be like? How do we get there?
Join us for the first data futurathon to work on small glimpses of the desirable future, and start identifying bits and pieces of the path that takes us there.
What will be covered in the workshop?
The workshop is based on the organisers’ work on data governance and citizen participation in the digital environment. Diverse ideas find purchase in the minds of people interested in a human-centered data economy: data ownership, data as labour, data commons, collective data governance, or data trusts, to mention a few. Through our work, we have learned that while all these ideas may sound good, their implementation might take us towards wildly divergent data futures.
In the workshop, we will consider rules, norms, ideals and aims that need to be taken into account in order to make desirable futures possible – and, equally importantly, to avoid undesirable futures.
What will I get?
You will be part of the process that creates the future you want! More immediately, the workshop will orient you to think about different data futures. It will be a thought-provoking start for the MyData conference, and it will help you reflect the conference’s talking points in a new light.
How does this work in practice?
The workshop has two sessions, Part I from 10:00–11:30 and Part II from 12:00–13:30. Part II will build on Part I, but it is nevertheless possible to also join only one of the sessions. We will discuss the outcomes of Part I at the beginning of Part II.
If you have the chance, it will be beneficial to have a look at these materials beforehand.
- Our data future, four scenarios based on alternative data governance models (by Valentina Pavel)
- Data agency at stake, a research paper on MyData describing alternative notions about citizen participation found in the movement (by Tuukka Lehtiniemi & Jesse Haapoja)
Reading the materials is not mandatory, but might help enrich the discussion. Also, feel free to come as you are.
